Stage 2 Hypertension
ACC/AHA2017
Stage 2 hypertension is classified when the systolic (top number) is 140 mmHg or higher, or the diastolic (bottom number) is 90 mmHg or higher.
Systolic blood pressure meets the Stage 2 hypertension threshold.
Diastolic blood pressure meets the Stage 2 hypertension threshold.
Normal Blood Pressure
ACC/AHA2017
Blood pressure is considered normal when the systolic (top number) is less than 120 mmHg and the diastolic (bottom number) is less than 80 mmHg.
Systolic blood pressure is within the normal range.
Diastolic blood pressure is within the normal range.
Elevated Blood Pressure
ACC/AHA2017
Blood pressure is classified as elevated when the systolic (top number) is between 120 and 129 mmHg and the diastolic (bottom number) is still less than 80 mmHg.
Systolic blood pressure is in the elevated range.
Diastolic blood pressure must remain below 80 mmHg for the elevated category (otherwise classified as hypertension).
Stage 1 Hypertension
ACC/AHA2017
Stage 1 hypertension is classified when the systolic (top number) is 130-139 mmHg or the diastolic (bottom number) is 80-89 mmHg.
Systolic blood pressure meets the Stage 1 hypertension threshold.
Diastolic blood pressure meets the Stage 1 hypertension threshold.
Hypertensive Crisis
ACC/AHA2017
A hypertensive crisis occurs when blood pressure readings exceed 180/120 mmHg. This requires immediate medical attention, especially if accompanied by symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, or neurological changes.
Hypertensive Crisis (Systolic)
> 180mmHg
Hypertensive Crisis (Diastolic)
> 120mmHg
Systolic blood pressure exceeds 180 mmHg. Requires immediate medical evaluation.
Diastolic blood pressure exceeds 120 mmHg. Requires immediate medical evaluation.
