Alpha aminoadipate is an amino acid measured in urine, primarily used in newborn screening for inherited metabolic disorders affecting amino acid processing. Elevated levels can indicate disorders of lysine metabolism or other genetic conditions affecting how the body breaks down certain amino acids. This test is part of expanded newborn screening programs to identify treatable metabolic diseases early, before symptoms develop. It's rarely ordered in adults unless specific metabolic disease is suspected.
This test detects IgE antibodies to grey alder (Alnus incana), a tree whose pollen is a significant allergen in northern temperate regions. Grey alder blooms early in spring and produces abundant allergenic pollen. A positive result indicates your immune system may react to grey alder pollen, causing allergic rhinitis symptoms such as sneezing, nasal congestion, and itchy eyes. This test is particularly relevant in regions where grey alder is common, such as northern Europe and North America.
