Cobalt is a trace mineral that is part of vitamin B12 and plays a role in red blood cell formation and nerve function. This test measures cobalt levels in red blood cells, which reflects long-term cobalt exposure and status. Elevated cobalt may result from occupational exposure, certain medications, or dietary supplements. Deficiency is rare but can be associated with B12 deficiency. This test is typically ordered when metal exposure or toxicity is suspected.
Chromium is a trace mineral that plays a role in glucose metabolism and may influence insulin sensitivity. Urine chromium testing measures how much chromium your body is excreting, which can reflect dietary intake or exposure levels. Both deficiency and excess chromium can affect metabolic health. This test may be ordered to assess nutritional status or investigate potential occupational or environmental chromium exposure.
